On a Tour of the Battlefields

On a tour of the battlefields I stood silently
Looking at the rows of crosses as far as the eye could see.
Graves kept neat and tidy, tended with such care.
For beneath each erected cross, a valiant serviceman lies buried there.

These men fought ferocious battles for the sake of you and me.
For the people of their homeland and the love of their country.
If they could tell a story it would be of the tragedies they have seen;
The futilities of war, or their young unaccomplished dreams.

Remember these courageous men, through them you are walking free
Or take a tour of the battlefields, where you yourself will see
The many graves of these brave men, whose precious lives were taken away.
So remember them with honour, especially on Rememberance Day.

Lovingly composed by Mary Rodham, aged 44 (plus a bit more)
